For Composers
VocalEssence provides outstanding enrichment opportunities to composers. To date, VocalEssence has commissioned over 120 works including full-length operas, major pieces for chorus and orchestra, and music for a cappella chorus. View a list of recent premieres and commissions, or download a PDF of the complete list.
Two programs co-sponsored with American Composers Forum challenge composers to write new music for voices and instruments.
• The Welcome Christmas! Carol Contest encourages the creation of new carols by offering a $1000 prize to one or two composers for their new holiday works.
• Essentially Choral is an opportunity for emerging composers to hear their works in progress read by a professional chorus and orchestra in a supportive environment.
Another composer program, the Junior Composer Institute, is designed for student composers, ages 14-19. Young composers from throughout the United States receive individual instruction in music theory, composition, and conducting as the result of the intense, week-long camp (July 5-11, 2009) on the Augsburg College campus. Presented by the North Central Region of the National Federation of Music Clubs.
