Minnesota Chorale
in
Founded in 1972, the Minnesota Chorale is Principal Chorus of the Minnesota Orchestra and ranks among the foremost professional choruses in the United States. Led by Kathy Saltzman Romey since 1995, the Chorale is best known for its work with the Twin Cities' two major orchestras, but is equally dedicated to fostering and deepening community through its award-winning Bridges outreach initiatives, educational activities, and independent presentations of choral works. A seasoned artistic partner, the Chorale continues to explore new artistic directions and collaborative opportunities, while earning the highest critical acclaim for its work on the concert stage.
Highlights of the Chorale's three decades of performances include three consecutive seasons as chorus-in-residence at the Aspen Music Festival, concerts with the Orquesta Sinfonica Nacional in Mexico City, recordings of Haydn's The Creation and The Seasons with The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, recording the Grammy-nominated Beethoven 9th Symphony with the Minnesota Orchestra, representing the United States at the America Cantat III festival in Caracas, Venezuela, and the premiere and recording of Adventures of the Black Dot, a staged choral storybook for the young, with music by Twin Cities composer Janika Vandervelde (now available on the Innova label).
Kathy Saltzman Romey, the Chorale's fifth artistic director and the Minnesota Orchestra's choral advisor, has prepared choruses for performances under many of the world's outstanding conductors. Formerly a student of Helmuth Rilling at the Frankfurt State Conservatory of Music, she is on the staff of the Oregon Bach Festival and prepared its chorus for the 1998 premiere of Krzysztof Penderecki's Credo. More recently, she prepared the Westminster College Symphonic Choir for performances with the New York Philharmonic and Lorin Maazel, and served as chorus master for the 2005 Choral Workshop at Carnegie Hall. A noted teacher, she is director of choral activities at the University of Minnesota, where she also heads the graduate conducting program and leads both the Concert Choir and Chamber Choir.
