SUMMARY:MNHS EVENT: Minnesota\, Place of Refuge
DESCRIPTION:What does “home” mean to you? Is it a place or an idea? Is it private or shared with others? Minnesota has been a place of refuge for many people looking for a home and new life throughout its history. Join us as we explore the notion of home\, past and present\, and how communities and individuals draw strength and identity from these places. \nFollowing the presentation\, lend your voice to a dialogue about how our communities can be better homes for everyone. Special guest presenter Melanie DeMore\, singer\, songwriter and vocal activist\, will lead a conversation with guest panelists. Light refreshments will be available. \nAs part of the VocalEssence WITNESS program\, this series of dialogues aims to connect history to the present and inspire our community through dialogue to envision and work towards a better tomorrow. VocalEssence WITNESS celebrates the artistic contributions of African Americans to the fine arts and to our common cultural heritage through concerts\, recordings and comprehensive educational programs. \n  \nThis program is offered in partnership between VocalEssence and the Minnesota Historical Society. The original brick and wood ceiling still remains and was incorporated into the design of Icehouse the restaurant\, bar and music venue. While we are not harvesting 75\,000 tons\, shooting videos nor recording albums\, the space still remains true to the original industrial aesthetic and we honor our predecessors of the space by employing our take on classical food and drink recipes and by keeping the music going. \nNation is a collaborative vocal band pioneered by composer/performers Jocelyn Hagen and Timothy C.
