SUMMARY:CONCERT: What a Mighty God
DESCRIPTION:Advance sales are now closed. Tickets are still available and can be purchased at the door beginning at 3:00 PM on Sunday.\nFeel your spirit soar to new heights at this vibrant and soulful program. Born of a dark past\, spirituals have an unmistakable power to connect us through our joys and sorrows. Dr. André Thomas expertly honors this past and moves into the gospel realm by conducting the Midwest premiere of his Mass: A Celebration of Love and Joy with orchestra\, soloists\, and choir. Continue the journey with powerful spirituals for choir and orchestra including “In That Great Gettin’ Up Morning” and “What a Mighty God\,” and get ready to shout for joy! \nPerformers\n\nVocalEssence Chorus & Ensemble Singers\nDr. André Thomas\, conductor\nNaGuanda Nobles\, soloist\nChristian Mark Gibbs\, soloist\nOrchestra\n\nThree Things to Know\n\nThrough spirituals\, enslaved Africans were able to express their community solidarity and vision of freedom while they protested the condition of slavery. The songs were a source of inspiration and comfort\, and sometimes a means to convey coded messages that included escape routes.\nThe Fisk Jubilee Singers played a pivotal role in the preservation and popularization of spirituals. They were the first to share the music of their ancestors with the wider world\, and their performances helped secure a prominent place for spirituals in American music.\nThomas Dorsey\, the “father of Gospel Music\,” combined the hymn of praise with the rhythms of jazz and blues. He’s the author of the gospel standard “Precious Lord.”\n\n \nLearn more\nWestminster Town Hall Forum\nDr. Thomas spoke at the Westminster Town Hall Forum on Tuesday\, November 12\, 2019 about “Understanding the Negro Spiritual.” Hear his presentation here: https://www.mprnews.org/story/2019/11/12/andre-thomas-at-westminster-town-hall-forum \nMinnesota Spokesman Recorder Article\nhttps://spokesman-recorder.com/2019/11/14/renowned-composer-andre-thomas-returns-to-minnesota-for-a-celebration-of-love/ \nKBEM Interview\nhttp://www.jazz88.fm/2019/11/14/dr-andre-thomas-with-vocalessence/ \n \n \nCONCERT PROGRAM\nhttps://issuu.com/vocalessence/docs/ve_fall_concertprogram2019_final_bdc0ce35b9d0a6 \nThank you to our sponsors

SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM: Lifting Every Voice to Inspire Change
DESCRIPTION:This Father’s Day\, gather your family and friends to sing for justice in a livestream with song leaders from coast to coast. Envisioned and created by VocalEssence Associate Conductor G. Phillip Shoultz\, III\, this event will be a joy-filled\, family friendly celebration with songs that honor fathers and the father figures in all our lives and songs that demand our attention and call us into action. \n“As a Black musician in a classical music scene mostly occupied by White people\, I was searching for a vocational response to the recent resurgence of a systemic problem–violence against my (Black) people\, ” said G. Phillip Shoultz\, III. “I created this event in partnership with Black leaders in our community and leaders of our nation’s most prominent singing organizations as a way to honor Black fathers and father figures\, celebrate Black families\, and stand in solidarity as we demand justice and an end to systemic racism. I want to see 10\,000 people singing together this Father’s Day. As a father to two young children\, I can think of no better way to spend the day.” \nPhillip has engaged rockstar song leaders from each corner of the United States (Melanie DeMore in Oakland\, Jason Max Ferdinand in Huntsville\, Alysia Lee in Baltimore\, and Phillip in Minneapolis). In addition to singing\, enjoy extraordinary featured performances from: \n\nThe Aeolians of Oakwood University\, named the “2017 Choir of the World” in the World Choir Games;\n\n\nEXIGENCE\, a Sphinx professional vocal ensemble highlighting artistry within Black and Latinx communities;\nJovonta Patton\, two-time Billboard Gospel chart-topper.\n\nThis event is a part of the VocalEssence commitment to advance inclusion\, access\, and equity. Read more about our commitment and our work online. \nDonate to AALF\nThis event is in partnership with the Minneapolis-based African American Leadership Forum (AALF)\, a nonprofit comprised of over 1\,500 African Americans who volunteer their time\, talents and treasure to support our mission to build a just society that works well for everyone. AALF is currently serving as a hub organization that is directing funds designated for Economic Recovery to Black-led organizations for dispersement.
