SUMMARY:EVENT: ReMix Singer Studio at Icehouse
DESCRIPTION:Advance ticket sales are closed. A limited number of tickets will be available for purchase at the door.\nBe part of something new\, and join us as we redefine choir. Pull up a chair and discover new voices as members of the VocalEssence Ensemble Singers perform music by up and coming Minnesota composers\, and reimagine songs you know as vocal band “Nation” (Tim Takach and Jocelyn Hagen) sings stunning pop a cappella cover songs. \nProgram\nhttp://issuu.com/vocalessence/docs/vocalessence_remix_singer_studio-fi?e=23224272/58878462 \nBiographies\nIcehouse is located in what was originally the loading docks to the old Cedar Fuel and Ice where over 75\,000 tons of Ice was harvested each year and later a part of Icehouse studios where many audio and video recordings took place. The original brick and wood ceiling still remains and was incorporated into the design of Icehouse the restaurant\, bar and music venue. While we are not harvesting 75\,000 tons\, shooting videos nor recording albums\, the space still remains true to the original industrial aesthetic and we honor our predecessors of the space by employing our take on classical food and drink recipes and by keeping the music going. \nNation is a collaborative vocal band pioneered by composer/performers Jocelyn Hagen and Timothy C. Takach. Their first EP “My Life Around You” was released in 2017 and includes 5 stunning pop a cappella cover songs. \nVocalEssence ReMix encourages breakout musical artists-whether you sing in a rock band or play classical music-to write for voice. Four talented\, emerging composers/songwriters are selected annually to have a six-month one-on-one composer mentorship with renowned composers Libby Larsen\, Carol Barnett\, J. David Moore\, or Timothy Takach as they each write two choral works\, one of which is suitable for high school-level choirs. The program also includes a performance of the new music by the professional VocalEssence Ensemble Singers\, and possible commission and publication through the VocalEssence Music Press. VocalEssence ReMix is a collaboration between VocalEssence\, the American Composers Forum\, the American Choral Directors Association of Minnesota\, and the Jerome Foundation.

SUMMARY:BROADCAST: Dreams of the Fallen: Coming Home
DESCRIPTION:“Dreams of the Fallen: Coming Home” is a musical tribute to the men and women we honor each Veterans Day. Hosted by Steve Seel\, the special’s centerpiece is the short masterwork of the same title by young American composer Jake Runestad. The work sets the poetry of Iraq war veteran Brian Turner\, and features pianist Jeffrey Biegel\, the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra\, and VocalEssence. \nRunestad’s and Turner’s works combine in this deeply moving exploration of experiences familiar to many veterans: returning home from war. The hour-long special includes music performed by\, or related to\, the armed forces veterans once served\, and features music that emerged out of numerous American conflicts\, including the Civil War\, World Wars I and II\, Iraq\, and Vietnam. \nThe special will air on Classical Minnesota Public Radio on Saturday\, November 11\, 2017 from 7-8 PM\, and will air around the country in various locations. Check your local listings to hear the special\, or listen online by clicking this link.
