SUMMARY:VocalEssence WITNESS Community Conversations: Legacies of Strength
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a unique event featuring descendants of people who share a special connection to Fort Snelling. Lynne Jackson will share stories of her great-great-grandparents\, Dred and Harriet Scott\, whose fight for freedom led our nation closer to civil war. Sharon Harper will speak about her ancestor\, Robert Hickman\, who escaped slavery during the Civil War and found a new life in Minnesota. \nNow 160 years since the controversial Dred Scott ruling\, these guest presenters will share stories of strength\, courage and perseverance as they recount the experiences of their ancestors and exploring the importance of legacy. Following the presentation\, join in a conversation about the meaning of legacy and its importance in the 21st century. \nAs part of the VocalEssence WITNESS program\, this series of dialogues aims to connect history to the present and inspire our community through dialogue to envision and work towards a better tomorrow. VocalEssence WITNESS celebrates the artistic contributions of African-Americans to the fine arts and to our common cultural heritage through concerts\, recordings and comprehensive educational programs. \nThis program is a partnership between VocalEssence and Historic Fort Snelling and is sponsored by the Knight Foundation. \n\n \n \n \n \n Lynne Jackson\n \n \n \n \n \n Sharon Harper\n \n \n\nThank you to our sponsor

Click to view a Minneapolis Convention Center parking map. \nConvention Center Ramp (above ground parking) – 3rd Avenue South (RECOMMENDED) \nThis ramp is nearest to the Auditorium performance venue; however\, the ramp is not skyway accessible and there is no drop-off available at the East entrance to the Minneapolis Convention Center (MCC). To get to the Auditorium\, walk across 3rd Avenue South and use the outside entrance to the MCC. \nPlaza Municipal Ramp (underground parking) – 2nd Avenue & 12th Street \nThis ramp is nearest to the main entrance and drop-off area of the MCC. Exit the ramp and cross Grant Street directly to the MCC main entrance. The Auditorium performance venue is just a short walk from the entrance– proceed straight ahead as you enter the building. DESCRIPTION:Advance sales for this event are now closed. Tickets are still available and can be purchased at the door beginning at 2:30 PM on Sunday\, October 16.\nAs a chill hits the air\, wrap yourself in the warm sounds of choral music and recall times when the kindness of others created a path out of loneliness. Sit back and enjoy two premieres that chart a course from solitude to security using singing as a compass. Bob Chilcott’s The Voyage unites voices from three generations to amplify ageless truths\, while Quilt Songs stitches together works created by contemporary quilter Kay McCarthy\, timeless poetry\, and the music of five prominent women composers (Carol Barnett\, Ysaÿe Barnwell\, Gabriela Frank\, Libby Larsen\, and Alice Parker) to celebrate the seasons of life. Hear excerpts from the Bard himself on the subject\, as new Guthrie Theater director Joseph Haj reads famous Shakespearean monologues commemorating the 400th anniversary of his death. \nVocalEssence Chorus & Ensemble Singers\nMinneapolis Youth Chorus\nVoices of Experience\nInstrumental Chamber Ensemble\nJoseph Haj\, actor\nPhilip Brunelle\, conductor\nG.
