Information about the performance

Supported by an Arts Tour grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, members of the VocalEssence Ensemble Singers, folk fiddler Sara Pajunen and Don Shelby as Mark Twain go on the road to Northern Minnesota to celebrate life on the Mississippi River. Through choral music and the spoken word, VocalEssence takes listeners on a musical journey of the past and present—choral masterpieces, favorite folksongs, traditional spirituals, and Americana—all paired with the words of Mark Twain.

As a leading Minnesota arts organization now in our 49th season, VocalEssence uses the power of choral music to enhance our community by producing innovative vocal music events that stir people’s souls, engaging people of all ages and cultures through innovative programming, school curricula, elder learning initiatives and advocacy projects. Called “one of the irreplaceable music ensembles of our time” by Dana Gioia, past chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, VocalEssence is renowned for its innovative exploration of music for voices and instruments under the enthusiastic direction of Artistic Director and Founder Philip Brunelle and Associate Conductor G. Phillip Shoultz, III.
