CONCERT: Montserrat Boy Choir
Nov 11 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm | $25 – $45
Perched atop a mountain near Barcelona, the choir of the Benedictine Abbey of Santa Maria de Montserrat is one of Europe’s oldest and most prestigious boy choirs. For the first time in their 800-year history, the choir will make its Midwest premiere at a space worthy of their soaring voices, the majestic Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis. Bringing with them a message of peace, the choristers will use music to transcend borders and speak directly to your heart.
PLEASE NOTE: VocalEssence will not perform on this concert.
Tickets are also available as part of a 2022-2023 Season Subscription.
- Montserrat Boy Choir
- The Escolania de Montserrat is one of the oldest music schools in Europe and is the premiere boys’ choir in Catalonia, Spain. By the 13th century, a small group of boys were already serving in the Benedictine abbey and Sanctuary of Our Lady of Montserrat by singing and playing different musical instruments.
- The choir boasts a diverse repertoire worthy of their eight centuries of tradition. Works range from Gregorian chant and music of the Spanish baroque to more contemporary pieces by former Music Director Bernat Vivancos and pioneering music educator Zoltan Kodály.
- Boys in the choir participate in daily prayers and sing in front of large audiences from all over the world. To see a day in the life of a singer, view this New York Times video:
