Bring Me the News: Choral Group VocalEssence to Share Stage with Rolling stones Next Week

Like the rest of us, the singers in the Twin Cities choral group VocalEssence can’t always get what they want.

If they want to sing with the Rolling Stones, though, that can be arranged. In fact, it has been.

VocalEssence announced Wednesday that the group will appear with the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers during the Stones’ June 3 show at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.

VocalEssence founder Philip Brunelle notes that he and Mick Jagger share the same birth month (July of 1943) and wonders if there’ll be an early celebration on stage.

The Pioneer Press says the Rolling Stones are inviting local choruses to join them at each stop on their 15-city ZIP CODE tour.

While they’ve played in arenas more recently, this is the first time since 2007 that the band has performed in stadiums across North America. When the tour kicked off in San Diego on Sunday, a choir from California State University Long Beach joined the Stones for “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.”Ron Wood

Classical MPR notes that the song was the opener of an encore set – meaning VocalEssence fans should not worry if next week’s show at the Bank seems to be ending without a trace of the locals.

In a mostly favorable review of Sunday’s San Diego show, Billboard says having a choir join them for You Can’t Always Get What You Want  “…was how the Stones were making a joke out of preaching the gospel of pragmatism, as if it were a spiritual thing.”

Brunelle says of  the June 3 show in Minneapolis: “It’s a great way to introduce choral music—and VocalEssence—to the legions of Rolling Stones fans at TCF Bank Stadium.”

The Rolling Stones posted the video below to YouTube after Sunday’s San Diego show.
