Internships may be available in marketing and public relations, communications, development, community engagement, and operations. Each intern, with their supervisor, develops a list of learning objectives and goals that they would like to accomplish as well as being assigned a project to be completed during their time at VocalEssence. Hours and length of internship varies upon the student’s availability and their assigned responsibilities.

Types of Internships

Marketing and Public Relations
The VocalEssence Marketing and Public Relations department produces all materials related to promotion of VocalEssence events. Marketing interns research press contact lists for print, radio, online and TV; assist in identifying groups to participate in our events; update the website using a content-managed system; write and edit collateral materials; and maintain concert and photo archives. Other duties may be assigned depending on the intern’s skills and interests. Excellent writing ability, confidence in computer use, and an out-going personality are essential to success in marketing and public relations.

Development
The VocalEssence Development Department supports the concerts, community engagement programs and operations at VocalEssence.  Possible intern projects could include prospective donor research, annual fund analysis, event planning and execution, and production of online materials. Excellent written, research and interpersonal skills required.

Learning & Engagement
VocalEssence Learning & Engagement programs promote cultural diversity and understanding, showcase new music by today’s composers and provide positive role models for young people.  Possible intern projects could include curriculum development and design, production of online materials, collection of up-to-date information about schools and community contacts, and evaluation analysis.  Excellent written and interpersonal skills required.

Operations

The Operations Department supports the artistic and production activities of the organization.  Interns will experience behind-the-scenes projects and participate in day to day activities including rehearsals, concert production meetings, guest artist logistics, and artistic planning.  These include both daytime and evening hours, and are flexible depending on the performance and rehearsal schedule.

Stipends & Academic Credit

Most VocalEssence internships are unpaid volunteer positions. If you are seeking academic credit for your internship, you must make arrangements in advance with your school and your internship supervisor.

Eligibility

Applicants must be at least 16 years of age, having completed two years of high school to apply, although internships are generally awarded to college and graduate students. Student status, however, is not a prerequisite for internships.

Deadlines

Spring (January – May/J-Term) Deadline: November 1
Summer (June – August) Deadline: May 1
Fall (September – December) Deadline: August 1

Application Process

Applicants must complete an internship application form and submit it with their resume, if they have one.  All application items must be submitted as a complete package. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. If you have questions about the application process, please contact VocalEssence at 612-547-1480 or info@vocalessence.org.
